"Weatherby II"

Dear Shela -
What a weekend!!!!  Kirby's cousins came for a "get away" weekend.  They enjoyed Weatherby.  Of course, Kirby had warned them we were getting a new puppy and he would not be leaving the house on Saturday.  They enjoyed just relaxing.
I can't tell you the number of times Kirby stated how proud of this puppy he is.  He also said I have chosen a challenge but that is alright.  Daisy is cautious but allows the puppy to lay on her long haired tail.  She watches him but I believe it won't be long before they will be snuggle buddies.  Beretta is still aloof and growls her softer warning growls then runs.  She doesn't want to hurt him she just wants to be the one to decide he is okay.  He tries to go up to her all the time then falls flat to the floor when she growls.  Then he tries to creep closer until she growls again and runs.  We went through this same thing when Beretta arrived with Weatherby I and again between Beretta and Daisy (these two are very close now).  So, I have no doubt these guys are all going to make up and be friends.... eventually.
It has been a long, busy weekend and I am tired.  WeatherbyII is wonderful and I am going to try to set some rules HA!   He is so busy all the time - except when he is asleep.
I did get one picture of Kirby & Weatherby - you can see the pride. Breeder's Comment:  The photo didn't come through but I will post it when we can figure out why we could not see it on either of our computers.   I am going to be up to my earlobes the next day or two but I will be sending pictures and another e-mail soon.
God Bless you so much.... Donna

What a wonderful, wonderful Weim you sent us.  He is so perfect for us.  I will admit, I catch myself (quicker & quicker) letting him do things I know I shouldn't.  He is so cute but we are making a conscious effort at not allowing him to bite our hands & arms.  His little mouth snaps at everything.  But we are making progress.  My major statement about any action he does is, "How much will we enjoy this action when he is a grown man-dog."  Sometimes I say, "Go for it - it is okay." Other times we will stop the action.  He is sooooo cute!!  My husband, Kirby, says, "I don't know what you said in your emails but they sure sent us a great fit!"
He had his first Vet check - 10 pounds even on November 13th.  She found yeast infections in both ears (maybe the air conditioner on the plane, maybe the ceiling fan over the bed or 100 other things??).  We are using the ear drops Conofite 2x a day for 10 days.  Breeder's Comment:  Weims are prone to ear infections which are usually yeast related.  Some have chronic ear problems and should this happen contact us we have found something that works better than any prescription or OTC ear treatment.  Most of all watch their ears, keep them clean, keep them dry.......and treat when necessary.  Everything else is great - nothing in his stool sample that I brought in.  She did say I will be ready to hang him by his toes in about 3 - 4 months.  Believe me my patience, love and past experience makes me quite ready for a very active Weim.  My bed and the house is covered in chew toys - worse than any house I lived in with children and their toys.  Spoiled you say???
He and my Mom's Collie get along great.  They play and share napping space.  She mothers him and watches over him.  BUT  my female Weim is still stand offish.  When she thinks no is looking she will even lick his nose but if anyone is round she growls.  It is just going to take her longer to make open friends with him but then she is older (9+) so she doesn't have the patience for the puppy teeth and activeness.
Kirby gets to spend the next 2 weeks off work to play with his baby and he is sure looking forward to it.  That is all he has been talking about every phone call since he had to leave Sunday.  They are cute - he and Weatherby II.
I know Weatherby is attaching himself to me because I am here all the time but I am hoping the two weeks will really make a difference with the bond between them.  I love it but I want Kirby and him to be #1 buddies.
We live in a house on stilts, so to speak.  There are 22 steps from our main floor to the ground.  I thought I would be carrying the puppy up & down stairs for the next few weeks.  No!!  Mr. Independent  follows the big dogs easily after 4 days.  I had some mesh stapled to the underside of each step in case he falls through but he is doing great.  I was shocked the first time - like a real trooper!!!
Well, I have to run - but I just wanted you to know how he is doing...... Donna
PS:  I told Kirby I was writing you and he said to tell you he has told co-workers about his new dog by starting with, "A Dusty Storm came through and left us Weatherby II ..........and I love him!!!!"  They make a cute pair.

We just got back from my daughter's house in Amarillo.  Weatherby did great with the menagerie of dogs - 5 with 3 being Weims.  It really was a fun trip seeing him try to do everything the big dogs did.  I didn't realize he could run so fast.  Right now he is running from favorite spot to favorite spot (I think he has about 4 or 5) around the house.

Kirby spent a lot of time with his new baby that first week when he had off......  12/29/2007  (see them pictured above)

Here are pictures of Weatherby II that we received on New Years Day 2008.  (As a breeder I want to comment that MOST Weims should not be doing serious stairs for the first 9 months.  Weatherby II is a very light and light-footed Weim and under the circumstances Donna really has no choice. Wow she must be in very good physical health. )

We are really enjoying him.  He is so much more calm - not calm - I just can't think of the right word but Beretta was really an excessive energy case when she was young and he wants to please more.  Maybe I'm just so mellow about them that there isn't much any of them could do  to get me upset anyway.  We love him and he does sleep in our bed.  At least he doesn't insist on getting under the blankets like Beretta does.  Every Weim has such a distinct personality.
In the morning after going out, he will crawl in bed up to the head and cry - Kirby plays "cry baby" with him.  The two get louder and louder until I get up or one time I kicked them both out.
Then he goes into my Mom's room and does the same with her and she cuddles him and tells him we must be mean for him to have to go to her for his morning reassurance and some AM lovin'.  He has everyone"s number and knows how to get what he wants.
He has a favorite bed toy - I call it his "binky bear" - it is an 18" blue teddy bear.  He carries it every chance he gets but especially wants it in the bed with him to go to sleep.  This was not done on purpose.  He always had toys in bed with us but when I started putting his toys away in the box - I knew he always wanted one or two.  That was okay.  I started paying attention to what toys he was keeping.  That blue bear is the only one he will run and hide and defend and even growl about.  Of course, when he growls I do sit with him and gently take the bear, cuddle it, talk to it then give it to him so he knows I am letting him have it not that he is telling me who it belongs to.
He is just so precious.  I am so happy with your choosing him for us!!!

Thank you, Shela.

More from Donna on 1/03/2008

Vet visit today January 3 for one of his booster shots.  He now weighs 26.5 lbs.  So gangly but that is okay.  He is such a cry baby.  Unfortunately he has attached himself to me as the mama (though he is close to Kirby too).  He tells the world when I am out of sight - at least for a few minutes until he decides the other 4- legged mates are around - then he settles down.

He and Beretta get talking or arguing and he gives just so much then draws the line.  She wants the line a bit farther but seems to okay some of his antics.  It is fun to watch them.
We really love this guy and he is fitting into our family fine.
Thank you so much....
Will write later - God bless you... Donna
